A bootloader is a piece of software that is executed every time the device is powered up. In the case of the Omega2, the bootloader’s main job is to initialize the hardware and then load the kernel and the operating system. It also has secondary functionality, like tools to flash new operating system images and built-in self testing functionality. 

Upgrading the bootloader will let you take advantage of our latest development efforts on the bootloader. The most notable improvement is that all pins will now stay stable and their power-on-reset values during boot.
